About Our Program

Who can volunteer?

Habitat for Humanity accepts any volunteer with a willing heart and working hands. There are opportunities for both individuals and groups. Construction experience is helpful, but not necessary. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old to be on a site during building activities, and can help with non-construction jobs like cleanup and errands. Those who are 16 and older may participate in the actual construction involving the use of tools. There are many off-site opportunities for volunteers under age 14.  Due to supervision situations, groups are usually limited to 15 people.

 How do I get involved?

After visiting the News and Get Involved! pages, email us or call us at 344-8527 to sign up for a particular activity, or for our weekly email updates. Once you have decided which opportunity you would like to take, contact us with your decision. Build Day opportunities are limited, and are handled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Groups should remember to plan well in advance.  Remember that to help this organization be successful, there's plenty to do besides building.

What will I be doing on a typical Build Day?

You will be building hope by building homes! Volunteers are put to work at HfHUC construction sites doing all kinds of jobs. Framing, siding, roofing and cleanup are just a few. What needs to be done depends on which phase of construction the project is in. The weather can change things as well. To find out what is planned for the day(s) you plan to volunteer, call our office.

 What do I bring?

HfHUC provides all the tools you’ll need. All you need to bring is yourself and your willingness to help. We do suggest that you bring work gloves and warm clothes if the weather is iffy (dress in layers).  Remember to wear appropriate shoes for the hazards of the work site.  Work boots are perfect if you have them.   Otherwise, wear good, sturdy shoes - no open-toes or clogs.

Do you provide water or refreshments?

Yes! HfHUC is happy to supply on-site water and refreshments to its volunteers.

 When can I volunteer?

For Build Days, Monday evenings, Fridays and Saturdays are the usual work days, especially for large groups.  Often there are two shifts: 8 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-5 p.m. Shifts can vary, so check with the project coordinator to be sure. Special build days can be arranged to accommodate a specific group.  Committees and Events groups usually meet on weekday evenings.

If I have questions, suggestions or don’t know what to do while I’m working on-site, whom should I ask?

We have a Building Coordinator who is employed by HfHUC to oversee the construction the home. He/she is well-trained in construction, and will be able to help you with any problems or questions that arise.  Additionally, site supervisors may be on hand to lead a specific task.

What if the weather’s bad on the day I volunteered? How can I find out if the work has been cancelled or rescheduled?

Groups will be told as far in advance as possible if work has been cancelled for a certain day. Always call the project coordinator on the scheduled day to make sure you are expected, especially is the weather is bad.  If possible, we will leave a detailed message on our office voice mail: call 344-8527.

How long does it take to finish a project?

Our goal is to finish each home four months after the groundbreaking. However, the average project duration is usually between six and eight months due to weather, supply problems and other obstacles. Of course, more volunteers teamed with more patient professionals make a project go more quickly.

Are there volunteer opportunities that don’t involve construction?

Yes! HfHUC is constantly looking for volunteers to serve in many capacities. Volunteers can work as committee members, mentors, project coordinators, special event organizers and more. Please visit the Get Involved! page for more information.

Once I have volunteered myself or my group, can I do so again?

Yes. There is no limit on how many times you can volunteer. Groups are more difficult to schedule than individuals, and should plan well in advance of the day they wish to work. Volunteers are handled on a first-come, first-serve basis.  We love to have experienced volunteers along-side newbies!
