  •     "House Sitting"  Join us for the arrival of the frame of the Grimaud home in Payson - June 2

PaysonHabitat for Humanity of Utah County will be partnering with Utah Correctional Industries (UCI) and Habitat’s RV Care-A-Vanner Program during the in the first part of June 2008 to build a four bedroom home with Rochelle Grimaud and her three children.  The home, to be located at 388 South 600 East, Payson, will be completed in two weeks with the help of out of state Care-A-Vanner volunteers and UCI work crews.  The home is currently being framed at the Utah State Prison site and will be brought down and “sat” on the foundation on Monday, June 2, 2008.  A house sitting celebration is planned for that same day at noon at the home site.  All interested community members are invited to attend.

UCI is Utah’s prison industries program.  Under the direction of the Utah Department of Corrections, UCI operates productive enterprises utilizing inmate labor to benefit tax-supported entities and other organizations.  UCI is a self-supporting program, deriving revenues through sales of program services.  The UCI REACH Program was established in 1989 and is managed by experienced construction supervisors.  The utmost care is used in selecting inmates.  Offenders hoping to participate in the UCI’s Construction Operation face stiff competition and must show a background of competency and be at the highest level of trust in the prison ranking system. This is the second time the inmates have partnered with the Utah County affiliate to build a home for an area family.

The RV Care-A-Vanner program, which is coordinated through Habitat International headquarters in Americus, Georgia, matches volunteers who travel in recreation vehicles to local Habitat affiliates in need of volunteer support.  The Care-A-Vanners camp their RVs while working shoulder to shoulder with the local Habitat staff and future Habitat homeowners.  Care-A-Vanners come from all over North America and from all walks of life.  The majority being near or at retirement age, their construction skills range from professional to first-time builder.  The Care-A-Vanners, who typically stay for two weeks, pay their own expenses to travel to Habitat building projects.  For more information abut the RV Care-A-Vanners program, visit www.habitat.org/rv.  This will be the third year that the Care-A-Vanners have participated in a home build with the local affiliate.

  •     National Building Blocks Event - 10 Homes in One Week!

Nov. 2006 - Our devoted volunteer and recently hired Construction Assistant Geoff Simonsen participated in the weeklong Building Blocks event sponsored by Whirpool.  Each year, an outstanding Habitat affiliate is chosen to be the recipient of the Building Blocks event.  The Nashville affiliate is working hard on the first and largest all-Habitat community in its Providence Park area, with more than 80 homes completed since its inception in 2002.  Habitat for Humanity of Utah County was chosen to participate in this national event based on HFHI's selection of affiliates consistently achieving a high standard of excellence.  Geoff has been volunteering with us for over 2 years, and "was a natural choice" for this event, according to director Kena Mathews.  Geoff was one of 100 Habitat volunteers who travelled to Tennessee, and he joined 100 local Nashville volunteers as well as 100 Whirlpool employee volunteers.  The event's participants built 10 homes in Providence Park over the week of Nov. 4 - 11.  Whirlpool has been a long-time supporter of Habitat projects throughout the world, providing cash and equipment donations.  The goal of this event was to raise awareness of the need to eliminate sub-standard housing in our country, and around the world.  We are proud to have been chosen to participate based on our consistent excellence, and hope to continue that trend in the future.

Empty lots at the beginning....      Geoff puts in plenty of hard work:       and voilà    Geoff's completed home!
